Known throughout Norway and Ireland, the Banshee is said to be the ancestral spirit appointed to forewarn families of their time of death. A Banshee can appear in any of three guises: young woman, stately matron, or old hag. She is seen with long, flowing hair and usually dressed in a dark grey, hooded cloak.
Like a modern day 'Grim Reaper,' the appearance of the Banshee signals to the onlooker that their time is ending soon. This signal comes in the form of an ear-piercing wailing sound that can be heard for miles and miles.
When several Banshee's wail together in unison, it is usually the signal of death upon someone holy or of great importance. So if you hear a deafening cry in the night, know that it means 'mourning' is coming soon.
