Celebs Who Entered the Hallowed Halls in 2003

By Stephanie DuBois

Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, Russell Crowe and actress Danielle Spencer, and Adam Sandler and longtime girlfriend, Jackie Titone were among the celebrity couples who were courageous enough to enter the hallowed halls of matrimony this year.\And courage is what it takes these days for a celebrity -- already living in a fishbowl -- to choose to traverse the twists and turns and myriad ups and downs of marriage in the withering glare of the public eye.

When a celebrity announces plans to marry, before the "I Dos" can even be said, the multitudes are speculating that "They don't really love each other," or "They won't last." And once those "I Dos" have been said, every misstep, argument and heartache gets played out on the world stage if one isn't very careful to safeguard one's privacy.

Ah well, whether the state of matrimony entered into was holy, wholly for love, or wholly for publicity, these are the other celebrities that tied the knot this year:

Beck/Smith Gossip The Inside Scoop
The hottest celebrity swirl from the true Hollywood insiders: Marilyn and Stacy.

"Titanic" actress Kate Winslet and Oscar-award winning director Sam Mendes ("American Beauty") did the deed on a veritable closed set in the West Indies in late May. So secret was their ceremony Winslet?s mom reported that even she didn?t know they were getting married.

Former "Baywatch" star Carmen Electra and Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro were wed last month. Unlike Electra's first marriage to basketball's basket case Dennis Rodman -- who claimed to have been so drunk he didn't even know he was getting married at the time, Navarro gushed to People Magazine that "I am marrying the girl of my dreams."

In the perfect fusion of above the line and below the line talent, actress Bridget Fonda (heiress to the acting dynasty of Granddad Henry Fonda, Aunt Jane Fonda and dad Peter Fonda) and film composer Danny Elfman got hitched in a church near Los Angeles over Thanksgiving weekend.

Supermodel Christy Turlington and actor/director Ed Burns ? who initially intended to marry in 2001, but postponed the wedding after 9/11 -- finally made it to the altar in June. Bono gave the bride away and sang at the San Francisco wedding.

British actor Kenneth Branagh who?s always made it a point to keep his private life simply that, secretly wed girlfriend Lindsay Brunnock in May; the same month "Friends" regular Matt Le Blanc married his long-time partner, British model Melissa McKnight, on the Hawaiian aisle of Kauai.

"Lord of the Rings'" Liv Tyler let her lord, long-time boyfriend Royston Langdon, give her a ring in March. The actress and the lead singer of Spacehog were wed in a private ceremony at a villa in the Caribbean.

Proving that music has no boundaries, legendary rocker Elvis Costello reportedly wed Canadian jazz singer, Diana Krall this month in a secret ceremony outside London at Elton John's home.

Ensuring that, at the very least, she'll always be dressed to the nines, Elizabeth Berkley tied the knot to artist Greg Lauren -- the nephew of fashion designer, Ralph Lauren -- in Cabo San Lucas last month.

"King of Queen's" star Leah Remini made it official with her longtime boyfriend, musician/actor Angelo Pagan in Las Vegas in July.

Former "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" regular Alyson Hannigan only played a bride in the recent big-screen comedy, "American Wedding." In October she became one when she married her long-time love, "Buffy" costar Alexis Denisof.

Evan Handler from "Sex and the City" tied the knot in New York City last month with Elisa Atti, an Italian-born medical researcher.

And Sir Anthony Hopkins decided that maybe three times could be the charm when he wed antiques dealer Stella Arroyave at his clifftop mansion in Malibu the beginning of March.

Then, of course, there are those who seem to have entered the shallow halls of matrimony, as in the much-hyped nuptials of "The Bachelorette's" Trista Rehn and Ryan Sutter. On close inspection can that recent union ? indeed, their very celebrity -- be nothing more than public manipulation by reality TV producers and the never-ending quest for ratings? An even bigger question is, can the mere sancrosanctity of marriage truly follow such an act?
