Surfing Stars Find Zen - and Excitement - On The Boards

By Stacy Jenel Smith and Stephanie DuBois

If you're interested in hanging out with celebrities this summer, you might want to consider hanging 10 - because there is a large and seemingly ever-growing number of surfing stars.Owen Wilson can surf. Cameron Diaz learned enough surfing skills to do her own wave riding in that "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" surfing sequence -- and says she loves the sport, even though she broke her nose on her 31st birthday during a surfing mishap off Waikiki Beach.

San Diego, California boy Adam Brody of "The O.C." was a surfer dude teen for real.

And "The Fast and the Furious" star Paul Walker, who started with a body board at age four, and graduated to a full-fledged surfboard while in junior high, makes no secret that his love for surfing goes beyond rising to an athletic challenge.

"Surfing soothes me; it's always been a kind of Zen experience for me. The ocean is so magnificent, peaceful, and awesome," Walker has said. "The rest of the world disappears for me when I'm on a wave." Walker's an all-around athlete whose other favorite activities include baseball. However, he says surfing is his favorite, and it's "something I'll be doing the rest of my life."

When long-time lovers and exes Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal wanted some soulful renewed togetherness time this Spring, they took to the waves.

Surfing became a hugely popular pastime among the "Lord of the Rings" company during New Zealand production. The way Orlando Bloom described it, spellbound by the great natural beauty of the country and the ocean, they couldn't help themselves, really. "We learned to surf, and we spent a lot of time outdoors."

Did they! Viggo Mortenson got into an accident one day while surfing with fellow "LOR" actors, and came out with a bruise on the right side of his face and around his eye. Reportedly, director Peter Jackson had to shoot only the left side of Mortenson's face throughout an entire sequence - and, given that the actors had been asked to avoid dangerous hobbies during filming, he wasn't exactly delighted.

What do you think Tom Cruise did to relax during New Zealand filming of "The Last Samaurai"? That's right, he went to shoot the curl between shooting scenes.

Surfing hobbyists range from Keanu Reeves to "Wonder Years" and "West Wing" actress Danica McKellar (a.k.a. the UCLA math brain) to Rachel Griffiths to firefighter cum reality show celebrity Ryan Sutter.

Some surfing stars are good enough at the sport to impress genuine hot-doggers.

Simon Baker of "The Guardian" competed in surfing on a state level.

Sean Penn is reportedly almost as good at riding the board as he is at treading the boards. Indeed, the Oscar-winner, whose role as perpetually-stoned surfer dude Jeff Spicoli in 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" helped him break the surface of public recognition, is attached to produce and star in Allen Weisbecker's surfer memoir -- "In Search of Captain Zero: A Surfer's Road Trip Beyond the End of the Road."

(When that might happen is anyone's guess, since Penn's booked with other work for the foreseeable future. Weisbecker's web site includes the proposed flick in his FAQs list, along with his comment "Don't get me started." Hey, that's why they call it development hell.)

"Blue Crush's" Sanoe Lake (Lena) gets high marks for her skills. Stars Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez (Anne Marie and Eden in the flick) learned to surf well enough to look convincing, but left the gnarly monster waves to stunt doubles.

Heath Ledger is touted as being quite a surfer. Aaron Eckhart is a devotee. Tom Hanks is regarded as the real deal. No wonder Tom's Playtone company's list of features in development includes a project for Universal about the death of high-profile surfer Mark Foo at legendary big-wave spot Maverick's in Northern California.

So remember, whether you're Down Under, in South Africa, Hawaii, Malibu or any other favorite surfari spot - that boss bro' carving a wave nearby might just be somebody famous.
