Troubled former child star Gary Coleman volunteered to end things with his erstwhile wife of six months, Shannon Price, in a recently-taped "Divorce Court."
Wait. Divorce Court, you say? Yep, turns out Coleman is a big fan of the show. Hey, when you've lived your whole life in the public eye like the one-time "Diff'rent Strokes" star, airing a little more dirty laundry ceases to be a big deal -- and more importantly, another chance for more notoriety.
After all, in early '93, Coleman chose to reveal on "Geraldo" that he'd tried to commit suicide by taking sleeping pills twice. And, in 2000, he appeared on TV court in front of Judge Mills Lane on charges he'd punched bus driver Tracy Fields in the head (he felt threatened by her pushy attempts to get an autograph).
The 40-year-old, 4'8' Coleman married Price, the 22-year-old, 5'7' redhead from Utah back in August, but problems seemed to surface immediately. A self-described virgin, Coleman reportedly said last month the marriage had yet to be consummated, but he wasn't worried -- "It will happen when it happens."
According to inside sources, one of the issues Coleman and Price discussed with "Divorce Court" Judge Lynn Toler were indeed problems in the bedroom. It seems that she wants to have kids and he hates kids.
Hmmm, perhaps he's remembering the trying time he gave others as a bratty, out-of-control youngster in his "Diff'rent Strokes" heyday. This reporter remembers Coleman holding up the entire set of the 1982 film, "Jimmy the Kid," while he was off riding around in his limo for two hours, only to return impervious to his fuming handlers and co-stars.
Coleman told "Inside Edition," "I never got the opportunity to be romantic or feel romantic with anyone." But, even that apparently didn't last long. Price has reportedly said Coleman "lets his anger conquer him sometimes. He throws things around, and sometimes he throws it in my direction."
Of course, that handwriting was on the wall and it was not in Braille. Just the month before they were married, Coleman was cited by a police officer in Provo, Utah, for misdemeanor disorderly conduct after he was seen in a "heated discussion" with Price.
Those issues and more will surely see the light of day in the two-part "Divorce Court" episode set to air during May Sweeps. Perhaps when one gets caught up in looking for oneself in all the wrong places, one can't help but find love in all the wrong faces. Let's hope this doesn't become a precedent for a reality show called "Celebrity Breakups."
