Jessica Vs. Nick: A Guide to What Was and What Will Be
By Stacy Jenel Smith

As many headlines and tabloid pages as there were devoted to Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey when their marriage was in trouble, now that the famous pair are divorcing, we are faced with an avalanche of coverage. Splattered everywhere is the fact she stipulated in court papers that she didn’t want to pay him spousal support. Did he ask for it? We've seen various versions of what the two did during their first holidays apart - some are even true. It's very tiring to try to keep up with all that. In the interest of service to our readers here is a handy guide to what was, what is, and what will be with the ill-fated one-time "Newlyweds."

 Nick Lachey

Vital Statistics:
   Birthplace: Harlan, Kentucky
   Birthdate: 11-9-1973
   Height: 5' 10"
   Weight: 180 lbs.

Where now: Has reportedly purchased a $3 million Beverly Hills mansion and moved in, happy to be on her own for the first time in her life. Where now: According to multiple sources, Lachey is staying in the $3.5 million house he and Jessica shared on MTV's "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica." Reports also have it that Jamie-Lynn Sigler's estranged husband, A.J. Discala, is also staying at the house.
Where now, emotionally: Per a variety of reports, Jessica is in mourning over the marriage ending but feels she did the right thing by filing for divorce. "Jessica's not angry with Nick," says a friend quoted in Britain's OK! Magazine. "They still talk to each other, and she won't let anybody say a bad word about him…They were happily married once. It was the right love at the wrong time. Where now, emotionally: According to several sources, Nick is angry over the divorce, having felt that there was a chance to fix the marriage. In an US Weekly story bannered, "Nick Gives His Side," his camp depicts him feeling ignored while Jessica was engulfed in the demands of her super-hot career. The fact her career has flourished while his has been in retrograde is an often-cited issue.
The beginning, hers: Landed 1st record deal, with Proclaim Records, small Christian label, at age 12. Recorded an album, but it was never widely released because label folded. She toured the Christian Youth Conference circuit performing with Kirk Franklin, God's Property and CeCe Winans. She and her father, former Baptist minister Joe, sold copies of the album after her performances. Lost out on New Mickey Mouse Club final round audition, while Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera got parts on the show. The beginning, his: Nick and his younger brother Drew excelled in sports and academics while attending Cincinnati's School for the Creative and Performing Arts. There, the Lachey brothers honed their vocal abilities.
Rise to fame: Sony/Columbia record honcho Tommy Mottola signed Jessica, who insisted she would only come aboard if she could maintain her nice girl identity. Her "Sweet Kisses" debut album sold 3 million. Her first single "I Wanna Love You Forever" reached the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1999, while her second single "I Think I'm In Love With You" reached the top 40 and "Where You Are" reached the Hot 100. Proclaiming her virginity-'til-marriage vow, she was positioned as the good girl as opposed to vixens Britney and Christina. Rise to fame: Nick was a sports medicine major at Miami University in Ohio, but a performing career proved his destiny. He met singer Jeff Timmons on an audition in Cincinnati, and Timmons had the idea of starting a group. Brother Drew and friend Justin Jeffre rounded out the quartet, and as the boy band 98 Degrees, landed a Motown contract. Six months later, in 1997, they released their self-titled debut album. Their harmonies won them fans, and their cuteness and moves won them screaming idol worshippers. The band released four platinum albums in all, with hits including "My Everything" and "Way You Want Me To." As VH1 put it, "svelte charmer Nick…was a bona fide star thanks to his sensitive performance style, and a career in Hollywood seemed destined for him."
Holy matrimony: IJessica and Nick's Oct. 26, 2002 wedding was held in a stone chapel on the grounds of Riverbend Church in Austin, TX. The couple had a Baptist ceremony presided over by a childhood friend of Jessica's. About 350 guests witnessed the exchange of vows. Jessica wore a strapless Vera Wang dress with a train and had a friend sing a song she'd written for Nick titled "My Love." Holy matrimony: Nick proposed to Jessica on a yacht off the coast of Hawaii. He sang "My Everything," a song specially written for Jessica, at their wedding. He wore a Hugo Boss tuxedo. The reception was held at Austin's Barton Creek Resort, a popular golf and tennis retreat southwest of the city.
The "Newlyweds" game: In August, 2003, MTV launched "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica" and it became an immediate hit. Audiences found hilarity in Jessica's ditzy "blonde" moments, such as her notorious "Is it chicken, or is it fish?" inquiry regarding Chicken of the Sea tuna, her apparent belief that Buffalo wings come from buffalo, her compliments to the Secretary of the Interior on how nice the White House looks. Meanwhile, her wedding book was a hot seller, and her Dessert cosmetics line's first year sales are estimated to be around $30 million.  The "Newlyweds" game: Nick does the best bemusedly aggravated hubby bit since Desi Arnaz on their MTV show, which ends in March, 2005: (Jessica: "Do you like your gift?"…Nick: "I love it baby. I like it a lot. How much did you pay for it? I'm serious."…Jessica: "$55,000."…Nick: "Fifty…Are you crazy?! $55,000?!") Amid denials that 98 Degrees is breaking up, he goes solo.
Sex goddess certification: Tops Maxim's Hot 100 List, 2004 Hunk credential: One of People's Sexiest Man Alive subjects in 2003 (Johnny Depp won).
Indiscretions: There was gossip over Jessica's relationship with Justin Timberlake's personal assistant, Trace Ayala, and with Adam Levin of Maroon 5 - which reps for both performers flatly denied. She was also said to have flirted with celeb skateboarder Bam Margera.  Indiscretions: His string of flirtations seems to go back a ways. After paparazzi photos of Nick, surrounded by cheerleaders at a February, 2005 Super Bowl party surfaced, along with reports he'd been out with ex-girlfriend Jordana Jajura, Jessica came forth to publicly declare, "I trust Nick totally and he trusts me." There was a tabloid frenzy over his evening with porn star Jessica Jaymes at a bachelor party. Jaymes told reporters that Nick did indeed watch her in a girl-on-girl sex show and put money on her, but denied anything else happened. Then came blabby coed Danielle Calo, giving the Enquirer and "Extra" details of a makeout session she claimed to have had with Nick.
Musically speaking: Jessica's 2003 album, "In This Skin," has sold over three million copies, to date. She is currently working on her fourth studio album, "And the Band Plays On," which was expected to be released by Columbia Records late in 2005, but has instead been pushed back until spring . Other releases include her single cover of "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," which - complete with a jaw-droppingly sexy video - it No. 14 on the pop charts. Musically speaking: His 2003 debut pop album, Soul-O, was a tough failure, selling just an approximate 105,000 copies. He's been in the studio recording another album, which is said to lean more toward rock.
Acting-wise: Her portrayal of Daisy Duke in the "Dukes of Hazzard" movie, which has grossed more than $90 million, made her a bona fide movie star. She has several projects in the pipeline, and rumors of her involvement in various projects (including playing Vesper Lynde in the next 007 film) pop up continually. But you never know - she's also said to be interested in Broadway. New York, brace yourself.  Acting-wise: He had a recurring role on the WB's "Charmed," and more recently has had a gig as a contributor on ESPN's "College GameDay." In November, just one week after separating from Jessica, Nick announced that he's developing a comedy series for the WB Network. He'll play a newly married baseball player who has to find a balance between his personal life and career. How original! Shooting is expected to begin in April and the network will then consider its inclusion in the fall 2006 lineup. Stay tuned.
