When I was young, my older brother and his wife came to live with us for two weeks while their house was being remodeled. They had only been married for about a year and were both in their early twenties. One Saturday night, my parents went to spend the night at my grandmother’s house. I told my brother and sister-in-law that I was going to my best friend’s baseball game and that I wouldn’t be home until about 10:30. They told me they were also going out and would be back late. But instantly, I moved away from the door and slipped quietly down the hall to my room. I can’t tell you how many sleepless nights that scene caused me for weeks if not months. It has remained burned into my memory for many years. At breakfast the next morning, my sister-in-law smiled at me as she made me some pancakes. She had always been very friendly with me and was always smiling, so I couldn’t tell if it was a knowing smile or not. Down through the years, we became good friends. Even though I had sworn to myself a dozen times to ask her about it the next time we were alone, I could never bring myself to do it.
