I was working at a grocery store as a cashier for a while just to make some extra money. Well, before you work there, you have to take all these classes and watch a bunch of videos on how to be the world's-best employee of the grocery chain--that kind of crap. There was another guy, "Devon," going to all this stuff with me. Devon was very shy and really kept to himself, but he was nice. After we had been working together for a couple of weeks, he asked me for a date. I had just broken up with my boyfriend and needed to get back on the dating scene badly, so I agreed. We decided to go to the local cineplex, where he told me that he was only 16 and, for that reason, wouldn't even try to get into an R-rated movie--which is horribly easy where we live. All the PG-13 movies were sold out, however. There was a TGIF next to the movie theater, so we went in there instead. As it turned out, he didn't have nearly enough money to pay for any food. So I ended up drinking about seven Sprites during the evening. Now, if you have ever been to TGIF, you know they have little TVs by all the booths. So I put on something that would ease the conversation, something to keep the talking going. Devon didn't talk much anyway, but after I returned from the bathroom, what was he watching? Basketball. A definite wrong move when you're on a date! So I sat there drinking Sprite after Sprite while he cheered on whatever the hell he was watching. When he dropped me off at my house, I didn't even hug him goodbye, I just sort of ran into my house as quickly as I could. Needless to say, work was very stiff after that. -- Jane, 18
