No. 1 Place Illicit Affairs Begin Of the married men and women who have affairs, 62 percent of men and 46 percent of women have strayed with lovers they met in the office, according to the Durex Global Sex Survey, making the office the most popular place for illicit affairs to start.
Stemming from the Latin "infidelitas," the word "infidelity" originally meant a want of faith or unbelief in religion. In the 16th century, though, the connotation changed and took on its more modern meaning of unfaithfulness to a person. London's Independent newspaper reports some fascinating facts about infidelity that were uncovered by the Durex Global Sex Survey of 13,000 people of all ages: - About 440,000 affairs have been discovered as a result of electronic traces, such as e-mails and cell phone logs.
- People over 50 are most likely to have an affair with nearly one-third of this age group admitting to having had sex with someone they shouldn't. This compares with 23 percent of those 30 to 40 years old and 14 percent of those under 30.
- People who work in three specific jobs are more likely to cheat than others: human resources, trucking and travel agencies.
- 44 percent of adults worldwide have had a one-night extramarital fling, and 22 percent have had a full-fledged affair.
- Nearly 33 percent of adults know someone who has been caught cheating with a lover.
And lest you think the illicit lover is always better than the tired old spouse at home, think again. The Independent reports that a London University study concluded that when unfaithful husbands leave their wives, only 3 percent actually marry their mistresses. And when they do, these marriages have a failure rate of between 75 percent and 90 percent.--From the Editors at Netscape
