Poll

Is casual sex healthy behavior?
Absolutely! It's fun.
Sometimes. Depends on the people involved.
Never. It's hurtful and degrading.
I don't know.

Sex Survey: What Women Really Want

Men: Listen up. When it comes to sex with you, women want one thing more than any other and that is quality over quantity.

No matter how much women have changed in the past 50 years, they still have not adapted to frequent, casual sex, according to researchers from the United Kingdom's Durham University. More than half of the women surveyed for this study admitted they had negative feelings about one-night stands. Men, on the other hand, greatly enjoyed fleeting sexual encounters.

It's all about evolution. Because men are more likely to reproduce from a one-night stand, they benefit from numerous short-term partners. Women are just the opposite. Instead of numerous partners, they seek men who have a high genetic quality. If a woman seems quite agreeable about having casual sex, beware! She has other plans for you. It's quite probable that she believes the relationship could become long-term and permanent.

"In evolutionary terms women bear the brunt of parental care, and it has been generally thought that it was to their advantage to choose their mate carefully and remain faithful to make sure that their mate had no reason to believe he was raising another man's child," study leader Anne Campbell told the Sunderland Echo newspaper. "But recently biologists have suggested that females could benefit from mating with many men. It would increase the genetic diversity of their children and, if a high quality man would not stay with them forever, they might at least get his excellent genes for their child."

The study: Nearly 1,750 men and women who had participated in a one-night stand were asked to rate both positive and negative feelings about the experience in an online survey.

The results:

  • Overall, women had more negative feelings than men about casual sex.
  • Specifically, 80 percent of the men had a positive feeling about the one-night stand, compared to just 54 percent of the women.
  • Men were also far more likely than women to want their friends to secretly hear all about the casual sex. This makes men feel successful because their partner is then desirable to others.
  • Men reported having greater sexual satisfaction and contentment following the one-night stand, as well as a greater sense of well-being and confidence about themselves.
  • Women complained about feeling "used." They were also more likely to feel they had let themselves down and were worried about their reputation if others found out.
  • Women found the experience to be less sexually satisfying.
The study findings were published in the journal Human Nature.
