Date By Numbers

Ready for some reassurance? Here's some love math you'll find reaffirming. You'll find there's a statistic to confirm just about everything you've ever noticed about dating.

  • According to U.S. Census figures, 44 percent of adult Americans are single. That's over 100 million unattached potential soul mates. (Unfortunately, there are no numbers as to how many of those are the type not to call after your first date, or will sleep with your best friend or wear sock garters.

  • There are roughly 86 unmarried men for every 100 unmarried women, though that varies by region. The best states for singles are New York, where 50 percent of the state is single, and D.C., with a whopping 70 percent of the population unattached. The worst places? Idaho and Utah.

  • Most single men and women are interested in finding someone special and are harnessing the powers of the Internet to do so. There are 40 million U.S. users of online dating sites. Forty-eight percent of men and 53 percent of women have used their services.

  • When picking that special someone, looks aren't that important. Sixty-seven percent of single American men and 86 percent of single women say that someone who smiles a lot is a bigger turn-on than someone who's good looking but lacking personality.

  • Fifty-one percent of men in the United States have had over six first dates in the past year, while 58 percent of women have had just four first dates in the past year.

  • Fifty-one percent of men spend over $100 monthly on dates, and 29 percent over $150, while nearly two-thirds of U.S. women spend less than $50 a month. Where does that money go? Italian restaurants! Forty-six percent of singles would pick an Italian restaurant for a first date. What they don't spend it on is alcohol. Eighty-six percent of men and 91 percent of women agree that two drinks is enough for a first date. One in five don't drink at all.

  • Take heart! Less than half of first dates end with a kiss (only 48 percent). And almost everyone - 90 percent - say first kisses make them nervous.

  • If there's no chemistry, 68 percent of men won't bother with a second date (but 56 percent of women will try again and hope chemistry develops).

  • And when there is chemistry, a whopping 97 percent of men will call within 72 hours to arrange a second date. (That settles it, girls. If he doesn't call in three days, he's not going to.)
