Myths Men and Women Believe About Each Other

Are men really from Mars and women from Venus? Or maybe this is just one of those flippant statements that has been bandied around so much, it's taken on a life of its own. There are a lot of things people tend to sigh out of frustration about the opposite sex that have taken on a mythical quality. Sweeping generalizations are nothing but harmful stereotypes that can affect your relationship, from the first moment you approach someone to your intimate time together as a couple. You don't want to use myths to blame or excuse behavior -- rather, look at the individual for whom he or she is and not as a cliché or hackneyed image. Here are the top five myths men and women tend to believe about each other:

Women want relationships/Men want just want to have sex: If we've learned anything in this Bridget Jones age, it's that women are just as horny as men and that men crave steady relationships just as much as women do.

Women are emotional/Men are practical: This goes hand in hand with the myth that only women have mood swings. Men feel their ups and downs with emotions and, perhaps on a lesser level, slight hormone increases and decreases just as much as women do -- they've just been taught by society to keep them under wraps. And, for better or for worse, women have been given a little more free reign to put their hearts on their sleeves.

Women are virtuous/Men cheat: Men may cheat more than women but the ladies are far from innocent these days. According to psychologist Bonnie Eaker Weil, author of Make Up, Don't Break Up and Adultery: The Forgiveable Sin, more than 50 percent of married women and 70 percent of married men cheat on their spouses.

Women are never satisfied/Men are satisfied with anything: While this may be a convenient thing to bark at your partner out of anger, it falsely paints women as nags and men as fools. An ugly, shallow conclusion for both sexes.

Women want to change men/Men secretly want to be changed: Encouraging change in someone is not a female trait -- it's a human trait. Plenty of men encourage their girlfriends or wives to dress or behave differently just as much as those women in turn want to give their men a new wardrobe or curtail his belching. On the flip side, unless you think you have a serious problem, no one wants to be changed.
