Look What They Found on a Shipwreck!
At the bottom of the English Channel, divers have recovered an extraordinary historical object from the wreckage of a 16th century English warship: the fabled sunstone. Called the Alderney Crystal, this piece of whitish Icelandic calcite was believed by some to have helped the Vikings, as well as medieval sailors, to navigate the high seas. The Associated Press reports that the Alderney Crystal worked as a type of solar compass that allowed sailors to determine the position of the sun even when it was hidden by heavy clouds or masked by fog or after it had set below the horizon.
