Side-by-Side Satellite Photos of Japan Before and After the March 11, 2011 Earthquake Photo Gallery
This combination of handout photographs provided by GEODAC, National Cheng-Kung University and the National Space Organization, Taiwan shows images taken by Taiwan's satellite Formosat-2 separately on March 11, 2011 (L) and March 13 showing the general area surrounding the airport in Sendai, before (L) and after (R) the area was hit by a gigantic tsunami. Japan battled a feared meltdown of two reactors at a quake-hit nuclear plant, as the full horror of the disaster emerged on the ravaged northeast coastwhere more than 10,000 were feared dead. An explosion at the ageing Fukushima No. 1 atomic plant blew apart the building housing one of its reactors on March 12, a day after the biggest quake ever recorded in Japan unleashed a monster 10-metre (33-foot) tsunami.
