This is the 47-million-year-old fossil of a turtle couple copulating. The amorous duo likely perished in the throes of passion after sinking into poisonous volcanic lake water. This extinct turtle species is scientifically known as Allaeochelys crassesculpta. Nine copulating couples were discovered in what is now known as the Messel Pit Fossil Site, located between Darmstadt and Frankfurt, Germany. Photo courtesy of Senckenberg Naturmuseum Frankfurt.
