10 Best and Worst Cities for Dogs

The best cities for dogs have lots of dog parks, veterinarians, and a low incidence of heartworm. Your dog wants to move...to Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The No. 1 city in the U.S.A. for dogs is Colorado Springs, according to Men's Health magazine. Basing the ranking on the number of dog parks, pet (and pet supplies) stores, animal shelters, boarding and daycare facilities and veterinarians, as well as a low incidence of heartworm, Men's Health also named Portland, Oregon and Albuquerque, New Mexico in the top three.

Nine of the top 10 cities are in the West, largely because there is more room for dogs to roam and more dog parks where dogs can run free without a leash. Colorado Springs not only has about 250 days of sunshine each year, but also lots of space for outdoor activities. It also protects its animals. The maximum fine for animal cruelty is $500,000, the highest in the country. Portland has the most dog parks per resident, while Albuquerque has the second-highest rate of pet ownership.

What are the worst cities for dogs? That would be Jacksonville, Florida; Washington, D.C.; and Detroit, Michigan.
