You Won't Believe What Kills Sperm Men who spend hours a day on their cell phone may want to put the phone down for a minute and read this. New research from the Cleveland Clinic that was published in the journal Fertility and Sterility concludes that heavy cell phone usage can lower a man's sperm count and create a higher percentage of abnormal sperm.
Reuters Health reports that the study involved 361 men who were patients at the Cleveland Clinic's infertility clinic. Each provided a semen sample and were questioned about his cell phone usage. Researchers found that the more time a man spent on his cell phone each day, the lower his sperm count and quality. The concern is that the electromagnetic energy emitted from mobile phones could be damaging DNA. Men who used their cell phones for more than four hours a day had the lowest average sperm count and the fewest normal, viable sperm. "We infer from our results that heavy cell phone use...is associated with a lower semen quality," lead researcher Dr. Ashok Agarwal told Reuters Health. An important note: The new findings do not prove cell phone use damages sperm, according to the researchers. "Our results show a strong association of cell phone use with decreased semen quality. However, they do not prove a cause-and-effect relationship," Agarwal told Reuters Health. More research is needed. --From the Editors at Netscape
