Why Women Feel So Desperate

They aren't lonely. They aren't tormented. Women are feeling desperate because they're inundated with household chores, and they aren't getting much help from their husbands or significant others.

When BizRate.com Research conducted a point-of-sale survey with a sample of 1,032 online buyers who are married or in a domestic partnership, they found out just how desperate women feel.

For starters: When asked with which "Desperate Housewife" they most identify, a whopping 77 percent of women answered Lynette Scavo, the mother of four and arguably the most harried of TV's desperate housewives. She has little time for cleaning, but she does what she can, when she can. In real life, an astounding 64 percent of female respondents to this survey report they are solely responsible for the housework in their homes.

The top three chores women say they are primarily in charge of are:

  1. 80 percent: Purchasing cleaning products
  2. 74 percent: Doing the laundry
  3. 67 percent: Cooking

And it doesn't end there. Forty-four percent of women say they have the primary responsibility for pet care, compared with 25 percent of men. And fully 53 percent of women said they are the sole caretaker of their children, compared with a paltry 3 percent of men. Forty-eight percent share the child-rearing responsibilities.

Of course, one reason women may find themselves pushing the vacuum cleaner more often than men is they admit to having higher standards for household cleanliness. More than half of the men surveyed (51 percent) believe that their home is "tolerable" and 48 percent of women agree; however, 17 percent of men think their home is spotless, while only 8 percent of female respondents agree.

So are we happy with the household division of labor? Fully 57 percent of men say they are "very satisfied" with it, but only 37 percent of women feel the same way. Despite the glaring differences, the perceived amount of time men and women say they spend on housework each week is virtually identical with women reporting 11.7 hours and men reporting 11.1 hours.

Fun facts to know and tell:

  • 91 percent of men say the appliance they use the most is the microwave oven.
  • 91 percent of women say they appliance they use the most is the conventional oven.
  • 58 percent of households spend $10 to $40 a month on cleaning supplies.
  • 60 percent of households have between five and 10 different cleaning products.
