The Top 25 Most Expensive Colleges

The cost of a four-year college education has gotten so expensive that many people, including people with advanced graduate degrees themselves, are questioning the inherent value of higher education.

And no wonder!

The nation's priciest schools charge more than $50,000 a year for JUST tuition--room, board and fees are extra.

That puts the bill at close to $70,000 a year. Multiply that by four--and add a little extra for cost increases--and that's a mind-boggling check to write for the vast majority of U.S. families.

This might put the stratospheric cost in perspective: Tuition has risen more than 1,000 percent in 30 years.

The most expensive school in the United States is Columbia University in New York City with tuition hitting a staggering $51,008 for the 2014-2015 academic year (the latest year for which figures are available), according to Graphiq and StartClass, which analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Education.
