5 Most Painful Places to Get a Tattoo

If nothing else, tattoos make a statement: I'm not afraid of pain. The amount of pain caused by getting inked varies from person to person depending on an individual's tolerance for pain and the tattoo site.

Newsweek reporter Temma Ehrenfeld has helpfully compiled a list of the five most painful places to get a tattoo. Depending on that statement you want to make with your body art, you can use this list to either avoid these places or go right for 'em. But no matter what, it will hurt!

1. The eyeball
While you're not going to get a sailor emblazoned on your eyeball, some blind people do get permanent makeup there to make their eyes look more normal. Other painful spots for permanent makeup are the eyebrows and lips.

2. The mons pubis
Tattoos down under are just about as painful as the lips because there are a lot of nerves that typically provide pleasure under different circumstances. If you're determined to do this, ask the tattoo artist to use a numbing cream.

3. The top of the foot or ankle
Women like tattoos here. They look delicate and feminine and can be easily shown off by wearing sandals or going barefoot. But since there is so little fat here, be prepared to grit your teeth during the procedure.

4. Behind the ear
It's a sexy look to be sure, but with nothing but skin, bone and nerves, there is nothing to help dull the pain. Ouchies!

5. The rib cage
The thinner you are, the more painful it is. And this goes for both men and women.
