The 5 Best Sandwiches You Can Eat

Is there any food more American than a sandwich? Meat, cheese and tasty toppings make for a lunch to remember, but beware! Many sandwiches, especially those you buy in restaurants, are piled high not only with pastrami and Swiss cheese, but also fat and calories.

It doesn't have to be that way. David Zinczenko, author of "Eat This, Not That: The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution," has created five sandwiches he calls "super sandwiches." It may seem too good to be true, but all five are tasty, filling and good for you.

1. The Sunrise Sammie
Ideal for an early morning energy boost, this breakfast sandwich is made with ham, romaine, tomato, cheddar cheese and egg on a whole wheat English muffin. "Studies show that people who choose quality protein over refined carbohydrates for breakfast are able to burn 65 percent more calories and maintain higher levels of energy throughout the day," writes Zinczenko in "Eat This, Not That."

2. The Gladiator
You'll build muscle power with this sandwich made with chicken, romaine, tomato, fresh mozzarella cheese and hummus tucked inside a whole grain pita. "This baby is bursting at the seams with lean protein, with the chicken, chickpeas [in the hummus] and mozzarella completing the trifecta," writes Zinczenko. This is ideal as a post-workout snack or anytime of day to fire up your metabolism.

3. The Gobbler
Eat well and fight cancer at the same time with this super sandwich made with avocado, turkey, Brie, arugula and cranberry sauce on rye bread. While a sandwich can't cure cancer, it can help prevent it when it's packed like this one is with antioxidants from the cranberries and flavonols from the arugula.

4. The Einstein
Build up your brain power when you put smoked salmon, red onion, avocado, goat cheese and pesto between two slices of sprouted wheat bread. The brain-building magic ingredients are the omega-3 fatty acids in the salmon and the anthocyanidins from the red onion.

5. The Sure Shot
Calm your nerves with this one: Turkey, egg, arugula, red onion and a grainy mustard between two slices of fresh rye bread. The "soothing" ingredients are magnesium in the rye bread and mustard and the tryptophan in the turkey and egg. Ah!
